After taking a degree in biochemistry at Sheffield University. I worked for 18 months as a research technician on the molecular genetics of capsule formation in Haemophilus influenzae in Professor Moxon’s Lab at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. This encouraged me to take a PhD so I could conduct my own research. I moved to Leicester University in 1988 and took a PhD in genetics after 3 years examining the molecular genetics of penicillin production in Penicillium chrysogenum. I worked in infectious disease research for 5 years at the Institute for Animal Health, Compton on genetics of Pasteurella multocida toxin production with Alistair Lax before joining CABI in 1996.
I joined CABI
to work in the health and nutrition areas, contributing my knowledge of
infectious diseases, biochemistry and physiology to the team. I work on the
Global Health database and Nutrition and Food Sciences Database. I am also the
Editor of the print journal Abstracts on
Hygiene and Communicable Diseases. As a senior member of the team, I
am responsible for the development of the subject selection criteria for these
areas of the database and quality of screening and
abstracting.
